I know you are upset right now, but its not an uncommon thing to have a skunk under the place where you live, but we are skunk removal experts here, and we do this every day. I can answer some of your questions here about skunk trappers and skunk odor.
A skunk will not dig unless he has a reason to. Skunks noses are close to the ground and they can smell a grub 3-4 inches down in the dirt. They also can smell the air coming out from under a house. The air carries odor that can interest the skunk, and the curious skunk digs under the house, or breaks the screen, and decides to live there. Its a nice place, no rain, maybe a few mice to eat, or a snake every now and then. No skunk wants to raise her baby skunks in a hole in the muddy river banks of St. Louis. Why would they when there are so many houses around. The trick is to use concrete and metal to keep skunks out.
Skunks dig in garbage to eat, and they aren’t picky eaters. Skunks are omnivores. Bugs, snakes, frogs, birds, eggs, mice, rats, and tomatoes are all on the menu. Later in the year, fruit that has fallen to the ground will be table fare as well as bird feeder scraps that have fallen to the ground.
Skunks cant climb very well. The biggest problem with skunks is that they dig holes, and that they stink.
If your dog has been sprayed by a skunk in St Louis, fear not. I have some free advice to you. Wet the dog down completely, then mix a bottle of peroxide with a shot of dishwashing liquid in it. Use that as a shampoo and rinse between washing down. Do it twice and you are skunk odor free!
